Studio I: A Beacon of Inclusion in Animation Design

Wim Dijksterhuis's Award-Winning Animation Promotes Inclusive Culture

Studio I is a unique animation project that stands out for its clear, bright design and inclusive characters. It was created for STUDIO i, an inclusive culture platform of the Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam and the Van Abbe Museum Eindhoven. The goal of the animation is to draw attention to the theme of inclusion, spread awareness, and foster inclusive thinking among museum workers. The animation was released on the platform's website and promoted through the social media channels of the affiliated museums, as well as at conferences.

The project was realized using Illustrator and After Effects, with some scenes previsualized in 3D or based on 3D renders for the 2D animation. The film was produced in two languages, Dutch and English, and was accompanied by several GIF loops for social media promotion. The team behind this project included Director Wim Dijksterhuis, Copywriter Boy Hulsteijn, Illustrator Steffie Padmos, Animators Adrian Moran and Wim Dijksterhuis, and Sound Designer Jeff Moberg.

One of the main challenges of the project was ensuring that the story and illustrations were inclusive. To achieve this, the team used an open storyline that raises questions rather than stating dry statistics. The illustrations focused on designing intersectional characters that do not just represent stereotypical groups in society. The color palette was also carefully chosen to reflect this inclusivity.

The project started in July 2018 in Amsterdam and concluded in September 2018. The animation can be interacted with by watching it online or at conferences. The aim is to change the mindset of the viewer, even if it is just a small beginning of change.

The animation has been recognized for its outstanding design and impact, winning the Golden A' Design Award in 2019. This award is granted to marvelous, outstanding, and trendsetting creations that reflect the designer's prodigy and wisdom. They are venerated products and bright ideas that advance art, science, design, and technology, embodying extraordinary excellence and significantly impacting the world with their desirable characteristics.
